How we choose

Our picks are based on research, not sponsorships. We compare manufacturer specifications, read long-term owner feedback, and weigh what experienced home baristas and coffee professionals consistently recommend. We favor gear that's easy to use, built to last and repairable. No brand pays to be included, and we update this guide as products change.

What to look for

Start with a scale

Measuring by weight is the fastest way to consistent coffee. Start with a 1:16 ratio: 20g coffee to 320g water.

Gooseneck kettles matter

A thin spout lets you pour slowly and evenly over the grounds. Normal kettles dump water and make brewing unpredictable.

Cone or flat?

Cone drippers like the V60 are more expressive but sensitive to technique. Flat-bottom drippers like the Kalita Wave are forgiving and consistent.

Don't forget the grinder

Pour-over shows off grind quality more than any other method. See our grinder guide for picks.

Frequently asked questions

What water temperature should I use?

Around 93 to 96°C (200 to 205°F) for most coffees. Slightly cooler for dark roasts.

How long should a pour-over take?

About 2.5 to 3.5 minutes for a single cup. If it's much faster, grind finer. If slower, grind coarser.

Do I need special filters?

Each dripper uses its own filter shape. Buy the matching filters from the same maker for best results.
